Plenty of tech professionals put their search on hold once fall arrives. The reasoning makes sense on the surface. Hiring managers are busy wrapping up fourth-quarter goals, holidays crowd the calendar, and January feels like a cleaner place to begin.
Waiting can cost you, though. The decisions behind January openings are usually made in October and November, and candidates already in conversation when funding gets approved are often first in line for interviews.
Year-End Budgets Shape January Hiring
Most organizations finalize next year’s spending plans during the fourth quarter. Once leadership signs off, department heads know which initiatives are funded and which positions they can fill. Many want new team members ready on the first workday after the holidays, so priority work doesn’t lose a month.
The money is moving in a favorable direction. Gartner projects worldwide IT spending will grow 14.2% in 2026, with software up 15.5% and IT services up 5.3%.1 Those dollars turn into implementations, upgrades, and support functions that need skilled people. Some departments also have unspent funds to commit before the fiscal calendar resets, which can produce fast-moving contract needs in November and December.
Demand is already visible in the data. CompTIA reported that active tech job postings reached 625,633 in September 2026, the highest total in more than three years, while the unemployment rate for tech occupations sat at 3.3%.2 Software developers, systems engineers, support specialists, data analysts, and DevOps engineers topped the list of most requested roles.
New Project Kickoffs Open the Door
January is a popular month to launch ERP, CRM, and cloud programs. Teams like a fresh fiscal year, a clean data cutover, and a full twelve months of funding behind the effort.
SAP customers face particular urgency. Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ends in 2027, and a SAPinsider study published in April 2026 found that while 55% of organizations have deployed S/4HANA, only 34% have fully completed the transition.3 Companies still mid-migration will need functional consultants, developers, data conversion specialists, and project managers to keep timelines intact. Similar demand runs through the Microsoft Dynamics 365, Salesforce, and ServiceNow ecosystems as businesses modernize and add AI capabilities.
Employer intentions back this up. In Gartner’s survey of CIOs and technology executives, 40% said they plan to grow IT headcount in 2027, with the heaviest demand in data and analytics (56%) and cybersecurity (54%).4
How to Use the Holiday Stretch to Get Ahead
Many job seekers take a break between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. That pause means less competition for the openings that stay active, and hiring managers tend to remember the applicants who kept the conversation going. Use the slower weeks for work that usually gets pushed aside, like tightening your portfolio, finishing a certification module, or preparing stories about how you handled a difficult go-live.
- Rewrite Your Resume Around Outcomes
Recruiters scan for results. Replace task lists with measurable impact, such as modules implemented, users supported, cycle times reduced or go-lives delivered. Put your strongest platform and version experience near the top and mirror the language in each posting where it honestly fits, since many companies screen applications through software before a recruiter reads them.
- Close One Skill Gap Before Interviews Pick Up
AI know-how is in especially high demand. CompTIA counted 349,821 active postings requiring AI skills in September, up 32,327 from August.2 A short certification or hands-on project with AI tools, S/4HANA, or a cloud platform can set your profile apart. If you’re unsure a credential is worth the effort, our look at whether ServiceNow certifications are worth it in 2026 offers a useful way to decide.
- Reconnect With Your Network Now
Former managers, project teammates, and client contacts often hear about funded work before a role is posted. A brief, specific note about what you want next keeps you top of mind when approvals come through. Specialized recruiters belong on that list, too, since many hear about requirements weeks before anything appears publicly.
- Be Ready to Interview on Short Notice
Hiring managers often try to wrap up interviews before their own time off. Keep your calendar flexible, prepare examples from recent engagements, and answer scheduling requests quickly. Line up your references, too, and confirm they will be reachable in December.
- Decide What Kind of Role You Want
Contract, contract-to-hire, and full-time positions each carry different trade-offs in pay, stability, and growth. Settle that question early so you can say yes with confidence when an offer arrives. Our breakdown of ERP consulting versus full-time work walks through those differences.
A Realistic Timeline for a January Start
Working backward from your target start date keeps the search on track. A typical path looks something like this.
- Update your resume and LinkedIn profile, then list the companies and platforms you most want to target.
- Apply to priority openings and book first-round conversations before calendars fill with year-end meetings.
- Expect final interviews, offers, and background checks. Paperwork and onboarding steps can take two to three weeks on their own.
- Step into the new role as the initiative kicks off.
Candidates who wait until after the holidays to apply often end up with February or March start dates, after the strongest project roles have already been filled.
