How to Land the Tech Job You Want

February 9, 2022

VIEW ALL POSTS

A tech job is not hard to come by right now. There are expected to be 1 million more jobs than job seekers in the technology industry in 2022, so finding a job is not difficult, but landing a job that makes you happy, doesn’t burn you out, and improves your career is the issue.

Before you start applying left, right, and center for your next tech job, the important thing is to identify what it is that you want right now.

Culture

We’ve all been in jobs where we don’t feel like we fit in. This makes going to work harder, limits your creativity, and leads to less productivity overall. Nobody wants that! In order to find a job where you feel supported, look for cultural viewpoints on their website and ask the right questions in your interview.

“It seems that the ability to integrate different points of view is what enhances individual creativity. In research by Carmit Tadmor, a Senior Lecturer at the Coller School of Management (Tel Aviv University), bi-cultural individuals who were able to identify with both their home and host cultures showed enhanced creativity. What Tadmor and colleagues found was that these bi-culturals had greater levels of integrative complexity, which is the ability to consider and combine multiple perspectives and points of view.” (Forbes.com)

Example:

Does the company showcase a diverse company population?

A supportive culture leads to an increase in collaboration, which in turn increases creativity.

Ask about teams in your interview. What tools are used to stay in constant contact? Does the company sanction events like virtual hangouts, or community service projects?

Raso Solutions has an extremely diverse team, encompassing employees and clients across three continents. We are looking to add new perspectives to our teams. If you’re interested in working with us, check out our open jobs here: https://jobs.rasosolutions.com

Challenging Work

Landing a position where the work is challenging but not overly stressful is hard to identify. Let’s be clear: a little stress is OK, but if the situation is constantly high stress, burnout is more likely. So, finding a challenge that will improve your skills but not exhaust you is the sweet spot for your next tech job.

Solution:

In your interview (preferably with someone on your prospective team), ask about deadlines and what happens when a project is completed. Is there any kind of recognition for project completions? As much as we might believe we are above being recognized, a pat on the back will improve morale.

“Recognition leads to a 47% increase in employee satisfaction and engagement.” (octanner.com)

Work/Life Balance

With the increase in work-from-home over the past two years, the work-life balance has actually decreased. More people find their workdays to be longer, with more frequent check-ins (i.e., meetings or messaging) from bosses and less ability to get away from work.

Solution:

Take a look at other employees on LinkedIn. What are the posts about? What time are these posts going out? Consider that salespeople may be working on commission, so their hours should not be the benchmark. Look for people in tech job roles like your own. Make a connection and ask the questions for yourself.

In your interview, ask an open-ended question about work-life balance.
